Steam Plant
This project starts in the central steam plant on a college campus to reduce steam demand and decrease energy costs across the campus.
Project Quick Facts
- Steam demand ranged from 8,000 to 14,000 tons/hr
- Steam burner and boiler sets are powered by biodiesel, resulting in annual biodiesel costs of $1.2M
- Savings are estimated at 25% to 35% per year
Project Phases
- Phase 1: Install a more efficient 4,000 ton/hr steam boiler, replace the burner controls on one 8,000 ton/hr steam boiler, and install a master steam plant controller
- Phase 2: Upgrade the building management system (BMS) and steam regulatory control actuators in each campus building to reduce steam demand with tighter building heat and cooling controls
- Phase 3: Optimize demand in campus buildings and apply AI algorithms with predictive operating envelope
